Whether your splint or cast is plaster, fiberglass or other, you can rest assured
you're getting the safest, most comfortable support available. Here's what you
should and should not do to get maximum benefit from your treatment:
Be sure to:
- Elevate the injury if you experience swelling. Using pillows, blankets,
a recliner or other soft means, prop up the injury above the level of your heart.
- Move fingers and toes frequently to maintain muscle tone and circulation.
- Keep your cast or splint dry.
- Check with your insurance company before driving. Drivers may not be covered if
wearing a splint or cast or taking medication.
Do Not:
- Do not get your cast or splint wet (plaster or fiberglass)
- Do not put baby powder or talc inside cast or splint to relieve itching.
- Do not remove or insert padding inside cast or splint.
- Do not break off or trim edges on your cast or splint.
Contact Your Physician:
If you experience:
- A blister inside your cast or splint.
- Numbness or persistent tingling.
- Breaks or soft spots inside your cast or splint.
- A loose fit.
- A wet or badly soiled cast or splint.
- A fever.
- Pain and swelling after you've tried ice, elevation and / or pain medication.
